artist statement
Painting is all about trusting the process and my intuition while being open to the unpredictable. Each painting begins with layers of texture that serve as the ground to which I respond. Colors are layered with repeated building up and rubbing off. Where they overlap, a new color is created and often shifts the direction of the painting. I embrace these surprises, which lead me down a challenging new path.
Investigating the layers of my painting serves as a metaphor for exploring an energy or spirit beyond the physical world. Shapes are imbued with meaning. As a universal symbol, the circle represents nature's cycles, no beginning/no end, unity, the limitless and the boundless. The square symbolizes perfect balance, stability, the four seasons, the four directions, the four noble truths, and the four corners and point to universal truths passed down through the ages.
